Beautiful place, would rate higher but the bathrooms are in pretty bad shape. Granted there's always some idiot with anger issues that feels they need to destroy these places. The state or county can't be held totally responsible, but they do have some culpability.
A nice stop after a long drive from Hilo/Volcano, nature walk easy but wear covered shoes due to lava rocks, interesting plants to look at ( my favorite is the Wiliwili Tree - pic with orange cluster flowers) ....
This is a great place for a short 2-ish mile hike. There is a free parking lot with some benches and restrooms. The hike is of easy to moderate difficulty, with the only real challenge bring the initial elevation gain and the descent involved some lava rocks. There are a few places to rest along the trail. Bring your bug repellent or you may be eaten alive!
Nice rest stop. Had bathrooms and running water (no soap). There are often wild chickens hanging around. Decent 2 mile (loop) hike with various local vegetation labeled. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes as ground is very uneven along hike.
Its uphill and you can grill. Have a little picnic.
