The good news is Pohue Bay and the adjacent stretch of coastline has been purchased for a marine reserve. It is a very important nesting area for the Green and Hawksbill turtles, and its preservation is vital to their ongoing existance in the Islands. If you go, please respect the Honu and keep your distance - especially during nesting season.
This beach is used by sea turtles as a nesting spot they are clearly marked as of 9/25/16 and some are hatching tonight most likely. Went there today its either 4x4 or walk 2-3miles to get there but worth it coconut trees with plenty to pick beautiful sandy beach all the way to where you cant touch anymore. Forgot my mask for snorkeling which made me sad because people spear fish and crab trap from there I was told and I seen a trap buoy. Good beach for a bodyboard since no rocks just sand. Also dont bring dogs during the turtle season which veries right now is that season and until Dec or even Feb the volunteers told me.
My favorite Beach I can't get to as much as I'd like to. Usually the Only people on the beach, small shorebreak if the direction is right in the winter. Sandy beach for the most part.
Plan to make the hike early, because you will not want to leave! It is a good hike, all lava field roads, so closed toe shoes with an excellent sole are a must! Pack a lunch and lots of water for the hike! it is over 2 miles each way and worth every single footstep when you get there. Nice big waves roll up on shore to play in, and if you swim out a way there is decent snorkeling. When we were there one other couple was there but the left shortly after we arrived, so it is pretty common to have it all to your self. I investigated every way possible to drive there, you can not without an real off-road vehicle, and trust me, I have taken rental cars places that 4x4's were not intended to go, and I am hear to tell you, you are not going to get down there with a car.
Long hike but well worth it.
Went again recently so this is the edit.
Swam with two pods of dolphins had the beach to ourselves absolutely the nicest cleanest beach on the big Island that I have found so far (many others agree) what I will say is clean up after yourself and enjoy this white sand beach.
Pohue Bay Beach is a gem along a very remote stretch of the Ka'u coastline.
It is very difficult to access, as the road is blocked at the makai end of Ocean View Ranchos. Even when open, the road is very rough, and not for the unskilled driver. (If you manage to disable your rental car there, you are in your own and a long way from home.) A moderately difficult hike along the road is an option.
